Success Isn’t Everything

I think most men have spent at least part of their lives chasing success. And to be fair, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to do well.

But if we’re not careful, success becomes a moving target. We tell ourselves we’ll slow down after one more promotion. One more contract. One more season. And then we’ll finally slow down. The trouble is, “one more” has a way of becoming a moving target.

I’ve known men with impressive résumés and empty homes. Men with plenty of money but very little peace. And I’ve learned that success without contentment is a difficult burden to carry.

Jesus never measured life by possessions or popularity. He measured life by faithfulness. And maybe that’s why He lived with such peace.

Seneca observed: “It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.” Contentment is wealth that no market can take away.
