Work Is Worship

For a long time, I divided life into categories. There was church. And then there was work. Sunday belonged to God. Monday belonged to me.

But life has a way of teaching us things we didn’t understand when we were younger. Somewhere along the way, I began to realize that God never intended to be confined to church buildings. He was present in meetings, workshops, warehouses, classrooms, and construction sites just as surely as He was present in sanctuaries.

And that changed the way I viewed my work. Because if God is present there, then my work matters. Not just the results. Not just the paycheck. The work itself. And perhaps what makes work sacred isn’t what we do, but who we do it for.

Before Jesus preached sermons or performed miracles, He spent most of His earthly life working with His hands. For years, He quietly labored as a carpenter. And I’ve often found comfort in that. Because it reminds me that ordinary work has always mattered to God.

Seneca once wrote: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” Faithfulness in ordinary things prepares us for extraordinary opportunities.
