The Trap of Comparison

I don’t think comparison is something we ever completely outgrow. It just changes forms as we get older.

I remember talking with a man who had built an impressive business. He admitted something that surprised me. “No matter what I accomplish, there’s always somebody doing better.” Because comparison has a way of moving the finish line.

Looking back, I think Solomon understood that envy doesn’t merely rob us of gratitude. It robs us of life itself. The truth is, God never asked us to run another man’s race. He simply asked us to be faithful in our own lane.

One of the things that has always stood out to me about Jesus is that He never seemed distracted by what others had. His confidence rested in His Father. And perhaps that’s where peace begins for us as well.

Centuries later, Seneca observed that envy only multiplies misery because there will always be someone with more. And perhaps that’s why gratitude remains one of the greatest protections against comparison.
