Guard Your Emotions

I’ve noticed that emotions make wonderful servants, but terrible masters.

That’s not because emotions are bad. God gave us emotions. They help us love deeply, celebrate joy, and experience compassion. The problem comes when we allow our feelings to become the loudest voice in the room.

If we’re honest, most of us have made decisions we regretted because we were angry, afraid, or frustrated. We said things we didn’t mean. We assumed motives that weren’t there. We reacted before we prayed.

Looking back, I’ve learned that feelings are real, but they aren’t always reliable.

Solomon paints an interesting picture. A man without self-control is like a city with no walls. In his day, walls represented protection. Without them, the city became vulnerable to whatever enemy happened to come along.

The same is true for us. Without self-control, every frustration becomes a crisis. Every criticism becomes an attack. Every inconvenience becomes an opportunity to lose our peace.

That’s why maturity isn’t learning how to suppress emotions. It’s learning how to steward them.

Jesus experienced grief, anger, compassion, and sorrow. He wept at Lazarus’ tomb. He felt anguish in Gethsemane. Yet His emotions never controlled Him.

His feelings were real, but His obedience remained stronger.

Epictetus once wrote: “No man is free who is not master of himself.”

Freedom isn’t found in doing whatever we feel. It’s found in learning not to be ruled by every feeling that comes along.
