March  •  Day 19

Discipline Over Desire

Day 78 of 365  •  FOCUS

If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it.

Proverbs 25:16 (ESV)

Proverb Truth

I’ve noticed something about life. Most of our problems don’t come from bad things. They come from good things used without restraint.

Food. Entertainment. Work. Money. Success.

Even blessings can become burdens when they’re not governed wisely.

Solomon uses the example of honey, something sweet and enjoyable, to teach a larger lesson. Just because something is good doesn’t mean more is always better.

And perhaps that’s one of the hardest lessons maturity teaches. Learning where enough is. Because without discipline, desires eventually become demands. And demands make poor masters.

Jesus in Action

Throughout His life, Jesus demonstrated remarkable self-control.

He lived with freedom because nothing owned Him except His love for the Father.

Forged Wisdom

Epictetus observed: “No man is free who is a slave to pleasure.”

Real freedom isn’t doing whatever we want. It’s becoming the kind of man who doesn’t have to.

The No Limits Challenge

Practice moderation in one area of your life this week.

Prayer

Father, help me live with balance and self-control. Teach me not to be mastered by anything except my love for You. Amen.
