Finish the Race

When I was younger, I was fascinated by beginnings. New opportunities. Fresh goals. Big dreams. There was something exciting about starting. But life has taught me that beginnings are easy. Finishing is hard.

Anybody can start a race. Anybody can make promises. Anybody can become excited about a new year or a new dream. But staying faithful? Showing up when enthusiasm fades? Continuing when progress is slow? Persevering when life becomes difficult? That’s where character is forged.

And honestly, I’ve come to admire finishers. Men who keep their word. Men who remain faithful to their wives. Men who continue showing up for their children. Men who quietly serve. Men who keep trusting God through the years.

Because I’ve learned that greatness isn’t usually loud. It’s steady. It’s consistent. It’s faithful.

And perhaps that’s why Paul’s words move me so deeply. As he approached the end of his life, he didn’t celebrate accomplishments. He celebrated endurance.

Because the older I get, the more I realize that life is not a sprint. It’s a marathon. And finishing well matters.

Jesus finished. Through rejection. Through suffering. Through misunderstanding. Through the cross. He finished. And because He finished, we have hope.

The Apostle Paul wrote: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” And Seneca wisely observed: “It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that things are difficult.”
