The Richest Man in the Cemetery

I’ve attended enough funerals to know something that becomes clearer with age. Nobody talks about portfolios. Nobody talks about square footage. Nobody talks about titles.

They talk about kindness. They talk about generosity. They talk about faith. They talk about memories. They talk about love.

Because in the end, people don’t remember what we accumulated. They remember how we lived.

I’ve never once heard someone say, “He sure knew how to maximize his retirement account.” But I have heard people say, “He would help anyone.” “He loved his family.” “He was a man of integrity.” “He walked with God.”

And honestly, I can’t think of a richer epitaph. Because there are no moving trucks behind hearses. Everything stays here. Except influence. Except love. Except faith. And perhaps that’s why people are heaven’s favorite investment.

Jesus invested His life in people. And because He did, eternity itself was changed.

Epictetus wrote: “What profit is there to gain the whole world and lose yourself?” Though not Scripture, those words echo a truth Jesus Himself taught. Because significance will always outlast success.
