Presence Matters

Years ago, I heard someone say that men and families often spell love differently. Most men spell it P-R-O-V-I-D-E. But wives and children often spell it P-R-E-S-E-N-T.

That thought has stayed with me because, if I’m honest, I know how easy it is to confuse the two. Most men I know are trying hard. They’re working long hours. Carrying responsibilities. Doing everything they know to do to provide a good life for the people they love.

But somewhere along the journey, many of us discover something we wish we had learned sooner. People don’t just need what we can give them. They need us. Not a distracted version of us. Not what’s left over after work has drained us dry. They need our laughter. Our attention. Our encouragement.

The truth is, ordinary moments become precious memories far faster than we realize. And perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give our families is simply the gift of being fully there.

Jesus always seemed to make people feel seen. He stopped for interruptions. He noticed people others overlooked. No one walked away feeling invisible. And maybe that’s one of the greatest expressions of love—to make people feel like they matter.

Musonius Rufus taught that relationships flourish not through occasional grand gestures, but through daily acts of faithfulness. Love, after all, is rarely built in extraordinary moments. It’s built in ordinary ones.
