Learn to Say No

When I was younger, I thought maturity meant saying yes to every opportunity that came my way. I didn’t want to disappoint people. I didn’t want to miss out. And if I’m honest, there was probably a part of me that enjoyed feeling needed.

But somewhere along the journey, I discovered that every yes comes with a cost. Saying yes to one thing almost always means saying no to something else. And if we’re not careful, we can become so busy chasing good things that we neglect the best things.

Solomon’s words remind us that wisdom isn’t simply choosing between right and wrong. Sometimes it’s choosing between good and better.

Because distractions don’t always come wearing a name tag. Sometimes they arrive disguised as opportunities. And the truth is, a focused life requires boundaries. Not because we’re selfish. But because we’re stewards.

One thing that stands out to me when I read the Gospels is that Jesus wasn’t driven by the expectations of people. Crowds constantly wanted more from Him. Needs surrounded Him everywhere He went.

Yet He remained anchored in His Father’s priorities. He understood something many of us are still learning. You can love everyone without trying to do everything.

Epictetus wrote: “If you seek tranquility, do less.”

Maybe one of the most spiritual words we can learn is the word no.
